Île-de-France Mobilités, the public transport agency in the Paris area, recently completed the conversion of its bus service center to electric power. The conversion lasted from 2021 to 2024, so the Center now supports 19 bus lines that run exclusively on electricity. The investment cost 28 million euros.
Sustainable development and environmental protection are important topics both in our society and economy, and of course also in transport. Our transportation choices have a big impact on our carbon footprint. Our cities will be cleaner and our workplaces healthier if we implement innovative and digital solutions for public transport, cycling, walking and other forms of clean mobility. Many European cities are implementing simpler, safer, healthier and cheaper solutions to fossil-burning vehicles, such as the use of electric vehicles, bicycles and e-bikes, green buses and trains, and even the installation of hundreds of kilometers of new cycle paths.
Therefore, transport also becomes green. And what is green transport? Transport has a significant impact on global climate change. Of the total emission of carbon dioxide, road transport accounts for 75%, and this tends to increase daily. About 95% of road traffic depends on oil. The part used for transportation accounts for 60% of the total world oil consumption.
Public transport has a positive impact on the environment and climate by helping to reduce pollution, create healthier communities and reduce the number of cars on the road. Each vehicle on the road emits an average of half a kilogram of CO2 per 1.5 kilometers of travel. Compared to driving a passenger car, using public transport reduces CO2 emissions by 45%, reducing pollutants in the atmosphere and improving air quality.
An electric public transport vehicle has zero pollution emissions when it is charged with electricity supplied from completely renewable energy, as is the case in Norway and Iceland.
Fuel and energy technologies that represent broad-based global trends in modern, cleaner, environmentally friendly, cost- and energy-efficient mass transportation include biodiesel and bioethanol vehicles - such as biodiesel buses and buses powered by other low-carbon fuel blends.
While we wait for green transport to take off in our region, we remind you of the benefits of using bus transport. Analyzes show that in bus passenger transportation, the least amount of fuel is consumed per transported passenger per 100 kilometers traveled compared to other modes of transportation, such as a private car, plane, and ship. Of course, even a bus cannot compare with a bicycle, which is certainly the "greenest" means of transport, but neither can a bicycle compare with the kilometers traveled by a bus in a certain time interval.
