Šibenik is a small tourist town in Croatia, located in central Dalmatia, at the confluence of the Krka River with the Adriatic Sea. Due to its natural location, it is logical that the economy is oriented towards tourism and the sea.
Under its current name, the city was first mentioned in the grant document of King Petar Krešimir IV from 1066.
Old Šibenik is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval cities, and the city's greatest artistic treasures come from its golden age, from the end of the 14th to the middle of the 17th century.
The most beautiful church in the city and in all of Dalmatia is the Cathedral of St. Jacob, built in the Gothic-Italian style. The construction itself lasted over 200 years, and was completed in 1535, and since 2000 it has been under the protection of UNESCO, as part of the world's cultural and historical heritage.
Cathedral of St. Jacob is unique in the world because it was built exclusively from carved stone, but perhaps its most striking feature is the 74 heads that the sculptor and architect Juraj Dalmatinac arranged on the apses.
We could say that Šibenik is a fortified city, or city of fortresses , for the reason that they are its most recognizable feature. In any case, there are four fortresses, and they were all built for the same purpose, i.e. as a defense against Turkish attacks.
The fortresses are a fantastic way to discover the city of Šibenik, especially because they offer magnificent views from their tops.
Through narrow, winding streets we reach the hill above the old part of the city, where the fortress of St. Mihovil lies, surrounded by ramparts about 1.5 kilometers long. After a lightning strike in the 17th century caused major damage to the gunpowder storage in the fortress itself, restoration began, after which the fortress regained its former glory, so that with its beautiful amphitheater it is an ideal place for various cultural events.
Most of the historical monuments of Šibenik are located in the old town center, but the fortress of St. Nicholas is located at the entrance to the Kanal sv. Ante. It is another building under UNESCO protection, built in the middle of the 16th century. Fortress of St. Nicholas is specific due to its Venetian style of construction and it certainly represents a very significant cultural and historical monument of the whole of Dalmatia. It is interesting that the fortress has retained its original appearance and rare Renaissance architectural solutions by which it can be recognized.
The fortress of Saint John was built in 1646 as a result of the Candian War, and was designed by the Venetian architect Antonio Leni. A year later, this fortress became an important stronghold in the fight against the Turkish general pasha Tekelia, who tried to conquer Šibenik. During the second half of the 17th century, a lot of work was done to restore this building in order to make it an even more powerful fortification, so it has survived to this day.
The Barone fortress was built shortly after the fortress of St. John, before the arrival of the Turkish army during the Candian War, at the request of the Šibenik defense commander, Baron Kristof Martin von Degenfeld, after whom it was named.
In the beginning, the plan was for it to be only a smaller fortification, but as it was extended over the years, it got its final form in 1659 during the time of the providor Antoni Bernardo. What makes the Barone fortress special is the high-tech museum that, with the help of augmented reality technology, provides an interesting experience of the battle from 1647.
