It is expected that the "Mother Teresa" airport in Tirana at the end of 2024 will show a result of even 10 million passengers, which is a step higher compared to the last year, 2023, when slightly more than 7 million passengers were transported. It can already be concluded that for the first 9 months of 2024, 8.4 million passengers have already been served!
The private investment group "Kastrati" took over the management of the airport in Tirana in 2019 and soon set great development ambitions, which did not prove to be unrealistic, as this Albanian airport has been breaking records in the entire region in recent years. Investments are huge, and capacity and infrastructure are constantly being improved. This airport currently offers a network of over 116 destinations, primarily in Europe but also beyond.
Mother Teresa Tirana International Airport is located near the suburb of Rinas, 11 kilometers northwest of the city.
Before the Kastrati Group took over the airport in Tirana, it was similar in size to the airport in Podgorica. Two years later, that space looks a lot different. Currently, seven new stands for airplanes, new comfortable parking lots and hangars for airplanes are under construction. The company's vision is to expand the airport to 40 square kilometers, in order to increase the capacity to 14-15 million passengers per year.
The introduction of the new terminal and the technologically improved reception and dispatch of passengers and luggage bring Mother Teresa Airport to the point of a very high level of service.
It is interesting that at the airport in Tirana there is a balanced division between low-cost carriers that usually operate direct flights, and national airlines that offer the possibility of connecting flights.
Every day, this airport serves more than 120 departing and 120 arriving flights
Planes literally take off every 15 minutes and they are often low-cost flights.
The most passengers from Tirana were recorded by lines to London, Bergamo and Rome. Apart from these cities, there are regular flights to Athens, Milan, Belgrade, Brussels, Vienna, Frankfurt, Paris, Istanbul, Prague, Zurich, Berlin, Dubai, Madrid, Stockholm...
The airport in Tirana is increasingly used by travelers from Montenegro, simply because of the much larger selection of destinations compared to the airport in Podgorica, so that last year around 53,000 passengers from Montenegro took off from Mother Teresa Airport. It is about 140 kilometers from Podgorica and it takes about 2 to 3 hours of driving.
