Skopje is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Macedonia, inhabited by almost a quarter of its population. This city is in an extremely important geographical position - in the core of the Balkan Peninsula at the Trans-Albanian and Moravian-Vardar traffic intersection.

During its long history, it suffered numerous destructions, but the greatest consequences on its architecture and cultural-historical heritage were left by the earthquake that occurred in 1963. After a long series of years, the project "Skopje 2014" followed, which aims to rebuild its main features, which were damaged during the mentioned earthquake.

In the town square there is sculptures, fountains and monuments that are the products of this project. The monument of Alexander the Great on horseback stands out, which, cast in bronze, together with the fountain, is 28 meters high. Also, the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle, the Triumphal Arch, the new building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the new Constitutional Court, the National Theater and the Archaeological Museum stand out.

The main and largest square in Skopje, the center of city events, is "Macedonia" Square, built from 1920 to 1940, which houses the National Bank building with a marble facade, a monumental officer's home, Ristic and the Mazur Palace.

Like most large cities, Skopje has its historical part whose spirit, despite various turbulent times, has managed to survive to this day. This part is called Bit-Pazar, better known as "Čaršija" and it stretches from Dušan's Bridge to Bit-Pazar as well as from the Kale Fortress to the Serava River. Inside the bazaar there are significant cultural and historical monuments - a mausoleum and a clock tower, two churches and several mosques. During the second half of the 20th century, the buildings that make up the Museum of Macedonia and the building of the Museum of Contemporary Art were erected there.

An unavoidable tourist attraction is certainly the endowment Suli - han, located in the Old Skopje Bazaar. It was built by Isa - beg Isaković in the middle of the 15th century. During the Ottoman rule, it represented the city inn for the accommodation of travelers and merchants, while today it houses the Skopje Faculty of Fine Arts and the Museum of the Old Skopje Bazaar.

Important cultural and historical sights of the city: Kale Fortress; Daut - Pashin and Cifte hammam; Stone bridge over Vardar; Church of St. Demetrius, Cathedral of St. Clement of Ohrid; Monastery of St. Panteleimon in Nerezi; Isak-beg's mosque and tower; the grave of the Macedonian hero Goca Delcev.

On the occasion of 2000 years of Christianity, the Millennium Cross was erected in Macedonia on the mountain Vodno, which can be reached directly by cable car. It rises above the city with a height of sixty-six meters and can be seen from a distance of about thirty kilometers.

Traditional Macedonian cuisine is a mixture of Turkish and Slovenian cuisine whose most famous specialties are chicken stew, chicken with mushrooms in red wine, stuffed peppers, buncek with cabbage and roast beef ribs. As a special delicacy, the widely known Macedonian ajvar stands out, as well as burek, gevrek, banichka and taratur. Macedonia is a country famous for the production of top wines of the Vranec type, the classic Cabernet Sauvignon and mild Merlot, as well as for the "Žolta" brandy and Skopje beer. The symbol of the nightlife is the old city cafes, you can feel the hospitality and helpfulness of its locals at any time.
