The UNESCO World Heritage town of Regensburg is a dream destination for history monuments and culture.
Regensburg lies at the most northerly point in the course of the Danube, where it's joined by the River Regen and navigable all the way to the Black Sea. With more than 150,000 inhabitants, Regensburg is the fourth-largest city in the State of Bavaria after Munich, Nuremberg and Augsburg.
The picturesque river invites you to a comfortable Walk or even a Danube cruise.
Why you should definitely visit Regensburg and what you mustn’t miss, we will show you in some of best Regensburg attractions.
Regensburg Cathedral
As soon as you arrive in the city, you cannot avoid the magnificent two towers of the cathedral.
The 13th-century Cathedral of St. Peter (Regensburger Dom), with its two 105-meter-high spires and magnificent west front dating from 1395-1440, is the finest Gothic church in Bavaria.
The cathedral is open daily from 6:30 am to at least 5:00 pm. Anyone who comes on Sundays can even hear the legendary Regensburger Domspatzen, a choir with over 1000 years of history singing.
The Old Stone Bridge
The best views of Regensburg are from the 310-meter-long Old Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke), an impressive 12th-century structure that has straddled the Danube for more than 900 years.
Do not miss the opportunity to stroll across the bridge to get a unique view of the city. Especially in the evening you can watch the sun slowly setting over the Danube.
Bismarckplatz
The Bismarckplatz in the heart of Regensburg's Old Town is an absolute highlight of the city. Especially in the summer you can experience here the joy of Regensburg’s life. Numerous people sit around two beautiful fountains, talking and enjoying the warm summer evenings.
From here you can excellently explore the old town, which is teeming with squares.
Museum of Bavarian History (Historisches Museum)
Situated on the banks of the Danube, the museum traces Bavaria's history from the 1800s to more modern times. Highlights include state-of-the-art multimedia experiences telling the story of generations of Bavarians during this period, along with displays of artifacts and documents related to culture, language, and sports. An emphasis is placed on educational activities and learning, including workshops and lectures.
Walhalla, Donaustauf
At Donaustauf, just 11 kilometers east of Regensburg, is spectacular Walhalla, the famous German Temple of Fame. It stands 96 meters above the Danube and boasts amazing views of the surrounding area. Built by Leo von Klenze from 1830-42 during the reign of Ludwig I, it was designed as a place to honor famous German-speakers from history.
